PINEHURST, N.C. – University of Houston freshman Zoe Slaughter posted an even-par 72 to lead the Cougars and tie for third following the Second Round of the American Athletic Conference Championships on Pinehurst No. 6 at Pinehurst Resort on Monday afternoon.
The Houston native began her day on the 6,290-yard, par-72 course with five straight pars before draining her first birdie of the round on the par-5 sixth hole. Following a bogey on No. 8, Slaughter opened her back nine with a birdie on the par-5 10th hole.
After running into trouble with two bogeys in a three-hole stretch midway through the back nine, the Memorial Senior High School product made birdie on No. 17 and capped her day with a par to join Julie Boysen Hillestad (East Carolina), Lorena Tseng (Tulsa) and Abby Hermann (Memphis) in third at 146.
As a team, the Cougars slipped to fourth with a score of 599. Tulsa and East Carolina were tied for the second-day lead at 594 with UCF coming in third at 595. USF stood in fifth at 604.
Freshman Anne Normann stood in 14th at 10, while sophomore Karen Fredgaard was tied for 18th at 151. Junior Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 20th at 152 with senior Ariana Saenz in 38th at 160.
East Carolina's Dorthea Forbrigd held the individual lead after the Second Round at 1-under 143. USF's Melanie Green stood in second at 145.

PAIRINGS
For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from UCF.
Saenz will start the day for the Cougars at 7:40 a.m. (CDT) Tuesday with Martinez (7:48 a.m. CDT), Fredgaard (7:56 a.m. CDT), Normann (8:04 a.m. CDT) and Slaughter (8:12 a.m. CDT) following.

AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORY
This marks the seventh straight season in which the Cougars will compete at the American Athletic Conference Championships and the sixth consecutive year as a team.
The Cougars have won three of the last four American Championships team titles and never finished below third. In 2019, Houston successfully defended its title and set tournament records with 54-hole team score of 13-under 851, while Leonie Harm captured the individual crown at 8-under 208.
Martinez is the lone Cougar in the lineup to have competed in The American Championships in previous years. The 2020 Championships was canceled due to the COVID-10 pandemic.
This marks the first time the Cougars will compete at Pinehurst #6 or in North Carolina during The American Championships. The previous six tournaments were held at Hammock Beach Resort & Golf Club in Palm Coast, Fla.

The 2021 NCAA Regionals will be held at University Club (Baton Rouge, La., LSU) Scarlet Course – OSU Golf Club (Columbus, Ohio, Ohio State); University of Louisville Golf Club (Louisville, Ky., Louisville) and Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif., Stanford).
Top teams from each NCAA Regional will compete at the NCAA Championships, set for May 21-26 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Houston is looking to compete in its sixth straight NCAA Regional. The Cougars have competed in NCAA Regionals every year in which it was eligible to compete as a team, starting with the 2014-15 season.
The 2020 NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
