
Slaughter Continues to Lead Cougars at MountainView Collegiate

Freshman shoots 2-under 70, stands in second entering Sunday’s Final Round
University of Houston freshman Zoe Slaughter and sophomore Karen Fredgaard each fired 70s to lead the Cougars and stand among the Top-Five leaders following the Second Round of the MountainView Collegiate on Saturday afternoon.
Starting off No. 1, Slaughter overcame a tough start which saw her at +2 through seven holes on the 6,250-yard, par-72 course. However, the Houston native returned to even par with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9-10 and drained two birdies in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 15-17 to stand at 7-under 137 through 36 holes.
Oklahoma State'a Maja Stark held the 36-hole individual lead at 136.
After sinking one birdie on her front nine, Fredgaard opened her back nine with a birdie on No. 10 and rallied from consecutive bogeys with birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 to tie for fifth at 139.
As a team, the Cougars posted a team score of 289 and stood in fourth at 567. No. 31 Texas held the Second Round lead at 558, while No. 36 Iowa State was in second at 565. No. 8 Oklahoma State was in third at 566 with No. 9 Baylor (578), No. 30 North Texas (578), UNLV (579) , San Jose State (588), No. 50 Kansas State (589) and No. 45 Tulsa (595) rounding out the Top 10.
Freshman Anne Normann was tied for 15th at 143, while senior Ariana Saenz was tied for 35th at 149. Junior Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 40th at 150.
The Final Round begins at 9:30 a.m. (CDT) Sunday.

For Sunday's Final Round, the Cougars will play together in a group, teeing off No. 10 at 9:45 a.m. (CDT).

Following the MountainView Collegiate, Houston returns to action when it tees off in the Bruzzy Challenge at Lantana Golf Club in Dallas on March 28-29.
From there, Fredgaard will compete as an individual at the Augusta National Women's Amateur on April 1-4 in Augusta, Ga. She earned the invitation as one of the nation's premier amateur players.
