NORMAN, Okla. – Sophomores Hannah Screen and Maria Jose Martinez each posted 71s to lead the University of Houston Women's Golf program during the First Round of the Schooner Fall Classic at Belmar Golf Club on Friday afternoon.
As a team, the Cougars finished the first day with a score of 290 to tie with Illinois and Louisville for sixth. Host Oklahoma held the first-day lead on the 6,048-yard, par-70 course with a score of 282 to stand one stroke ahead of Texas.
Alabama (284), Mississippi State (287) and Florida State (289) stood ahead of Houston with Clemson (294), Baylor (295) and Texas A&M (295) rounding out the Top-11 leaders.
The Cougars battled windy conditions throughout the day. While temperatures hovered in the 90s, winds blew from the south at 20 mph with gusts up to 27 mph.
Screen started the day with a birdie off No. 1 and added back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11-12. Like Screen, Martinez also put up a red number on her first hole of the day and added two more birdies on her front nine to pace Houston.
Freshman Karen Fredgaard overcame a tough front nine to sink three consecutive birdies on Nos. 14-15 and joined sophomore Annie Kim in a tie for 36th at 74. Senior Brooke McDougald stood in 80th at 84.
Competing as an individual and making her season debut, senior Amanda Elich was tied for 65th at 77.
Mississippi State's Clara Moyano held the first-day lead at 4-under 66. Oklahoma teammates Kaitlin Milligan and Mikhaela Fortuna stood 2-3 with 67 and 68, respectively, while six players were tied for fourth at 69.
The 54-hole tournament continues at 9 a.m., Saturday with the Final Round teeing off at 8:30 a.m., Sunday.

SECOND-ROUND PAIRINGS
For Saturday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Louisville and Clemson.
McDougald will start the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at 8:30 a.m., with Kim (8:40 a.m.), Fredgaard (8:50 a.m.), Martinez (9 a.m.) and Screen (9:10 a.m.) following. Elich tees off No. 10 at 9:40 a.m.
