SAN MARCOS, Texas – University of Houston freshman Karen Fredgaard posted a 68 in the Second Round of the Jim West Challenge and finished the first day in a tie for 12th at 5-under 139 on Sunday evening.
Fredgaard opened the tournament with a 1-under 71 in the morning round and enjoyed her team-leading second round of the season in the 60s in the afternoon session on the 6,033-yard, par-72 course at Kissing Tree Golf Club.
Fredgaard overcame a bogey on her first hole of the day on No. 2 with a pair of birdies and closed her first 18 holes with an eagle on the par-4 first hole in the First Round.
In the Second Round, the Asserbo, Denmark, native added two birdies on her first four holes and drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 8-9. Following a bogey on No. 13, she added two birdies on her next three holes and closed out the first day with a birdie on No. 1.
As a team, the 22nd ranked Cougars finished with a pair of sub-par rounds Sunday and stood in seventh with a score of 565. After opening at 285, Houston bettered that total by five shots in their afternoon session.
No. 15 Mississippi and No. 40 Texas Tech held the first-day lead at 552 to stand eight shots ahead of No. 46 Miami (Fla.). No. 32 Oklahoma (561), host Texas State (561) and TCU (562) rounded out the Top-6 with No. 44 Texas A&M (567), Notre Dame (568), No. 25 Florida State (569) and UNLV completing the Top 10.
Like Fredgaard, sophomore Annie Kim began the tournament with a 71 in the First Round and finished with a 70 in afternoon play, thanks to six birdies. The Seoul native was tied for 25th at 141.
Sophomore and All-American Athletic Conference selection Hannah Screen was tied for 29th at 142, shooting 71s in each round. The Berkhamsted, U.K., native sank five birdies in the Second Round.
Junior Ariana Saenz was tied for 33rd at 143. After an even-par 72 in the First Round, Saenz took advantage of three birdies in the Second Round on the way to a 71.
Sophomore Maria Jose Martinez stood 68th at 150.
Texas Tech teammates Amy Taylor and Gala Dumez, Mississippi's Julia Johnson and Oklahoma's Kaitlin Milligan held the first-day lead at 8-under 136. Sofia Garcia (Texas Tech), Kristyna Frydlova (Miami (Fla.)), Conner Beth Ball (Mississippi) and Sydney Youngblood (Oklahoma) were tied for fifth at 137.
The tournament concludes with the Final Round beginning with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start Monday.

FINAL-ROUND PAIRINGS
For Monday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from Texas A&M and Notre Dame.
Kim will start the day in the first group off No. 8 with Fredgaard (second group off No. 8), Screen (No. 9), Martinez (first group off No. 10) and Saenz (second group off No. 10) following.
