SAN MARCOS, Texas – University of Houston freshman Karen Fredgaard and sophomore Hannah Screen led the Cougars for the second straight tournament to open the fall season with their performances in the Final Round at the Jim West Challenge on Monday afternoon.
Each player posted three straight sub-par rounds in the two-day tournament to lead the Cougars to a seventh-place team finish. Fredgaard fired an even-par 72 on the 6,033-yard course at Kissing Tree Golf Club and tied for ninth at 5-under 211, while Screen shot the Cougars' low round of the day with a 70 and tied for 17th at 212.
As a team, the 22nd-ranked Cougars posted a 289 Monday and finished seventh with a score of 10-under 854. No. 15 Mississippi captured the team title with a score of 837 to finish 10 strokes ahead of No. 40 Texas Tech.
No. 46 Miami (Fla.) (848), Texas State (850), No. 44 Texas A&M (850) and TCU (853) rounded out the Top-6 teams with No. 32 Oklahoma (858), No. 25 Florida State (859) and Notre Dame (864) completing the Top 10.
Texas State's Sasikarn Somboonsup shot a 67 in the Final Round and earned medalist honors with a score of 10-under 206. Mississippi's Julia Johnson finished second at 207 while Blanca Fernandez Garciz-Poggio (Texas A&M) and No. 12 Sofia Garcia (Texas Tech) tied for third at 208.
Fredgaard, who stood at No. 72 in the latest Golfstat rankings, began Monday's Final Round on fire with three straight birdies on Nos. 8-10. The Asserbo, Denmark, native overcame a bogey on No. 12 with her fourth birdie on her first eight holes at the par-3 15th hole.
With her performance, she recorded her second Top-10 finish in the first three collegiate tournaments of her career.
Screen, who checked in at No. 22 in Golfstat rankings, led the Cougars with six birdies in her Final Round. Screen overcame a tough start which saw her post back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12-13.
Fortunately, the Berkhamsted, U.K., native quickly returned to red numbers with three birdies on her next four holes, including consecutive birdies on Nos. 16-17. Screen moved to 2-under with another birdie on the par-4 first hole and added back-to-back birdies again on Nos. 5-6.
It was Screen's third straight Top-20 showing in 2019-20 and the eight Top-20 finish of her young career.
Sophomore Annie Kim tied for 27th at 214, while junior Ariana Saenz tied for 36th at 217. Sophomore Maria Jose Martinez tied for 69th at 228.

Following the Jim West Challenge, the Cougars close their fall season when they host the White Sands Invitational at Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas, on Oct. 28-30.
The Cougars return from their break and begin the spring season at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans on Feb. 16-18, 2020.
