BATON ROUGE, La. â€" University of Houston senior Megan Thothong drained six birdies on the way to a 2-under 70 and the individual lead after the First Round at the LSU Tiger Classic on Friday afternoon.
Thothong was one of four Cougars to stand among the top-11 leaders after the opening 18 holes. As a team, the 26th-ranked Cougars posted a score of 297 in the First Round to hold an 8-stroke lead over host and 48th-ranked LSU and No. 38 NC State.
Thothong jumped out with a hot start early in her front nine on the 6,247-yard, par-72 course at the University Club. Teeing off No. 1, the Dallas native drained four birdies in a five-hole stretch midway through her first nine holes.
Although she endured back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12-13, Thothong rallied with birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 to hold a 3-stroke lead over Chattanooga's Monica San Juan and Terese Romeo of Mercer.
Southern Miss (308), No. 25 Virginia (313), Mercer (314), Chattanooga (315), SMU (316), Charlotte (317) and UTSA (320) rounded out the Top-10 leaders.
Junior Leonie Harm overcame a tough start that saw her bogey three of her first four holes to start the day to post a 74 and tie for fourth.
Sophomore Amanda Elich made two birdies and senior Courtney Tibletti each made a pair of birdies in their opening rounds and were tied for ninth at 75s. Junior Yuka Kajiki was tied for 19th at 77, while senior Allie Andersen and junior Tatiana Pineda were tied for 22nd with 78s.
The tournament runs through Sunday with 18 holes, beginning with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start each day. Admission is free, and all fans are invited to attend.

SECOND ROUND on SATURDAY
Saturday's Second Round begins with an 8:30 a.m., split-tee start. The Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from LSU and NC State.
Pineda begins the day for the Cougars off No. 1 at (9:40 a.m.) with Andersen (9:50 a.m.), Tibiletti (10 a.m.), Harm (10:10 a.m.) and Thothong (10:20 a.m.) following.
Kajiki will start off No. 1 beginning at 9:20 a.m., with Elich following at 9:30 a.m.
UP NEXT
Following the LSU Tiger Classic, the Cougars close out the regular season when they tee off at the Bruzzy Challenge on April 2-3 at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
From there, the team enters the postseason beginning with the American Athletic Conference Championships on the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Golf & Spa Resort in Palm Coast, Fla., on April 15-17.
