Houston Wraps Up Season at South Central Regional

Cougar women 12th, men 14th at NCAA’s first round
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Cross Country teams wrapped up the 2018 season at the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday at Watts Cross Country Course in College Station, Texas.
HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second-consecutive meet, senior Britani Gonzales led the Cougars across the finish line. Houston's top finisher at The American Championships in October, Gonzales finished the 6,000-meter race at the South Central Regional in 43rd with a time of 22:07.0.
Junior Meredith Sorensen was the next Cougar to cross the line, finishing just seconds behind Gonzales in 22:11.6 to finish 47th, while freshman Regan Lobodzinski completed an impressive first season on campus in 22:40.5 to place 65th.
Senior Jennifer Dunlap and Jahnavi Schneider ran neck-and-neck with each other the entire race. The duo closed out the scoring for Houston with Dunlap finishing 96th in 23:11.9 and Schneider in 97th in 23:19.0, respectively.
As a team, the women finished 12th overall with 334 points.
Freshman Devin Vallejo-Bannister became Houston's fifth men's student-athlete to pace the Cougars in a race this season, crossing the line first for the Cougars on Friday. Vallejo-Bannister ran through the chute in 33:40.8 to place 65th.
Another Houston freshman was the second Cougar across the line, when Gabriel Armijo finished in 33:54.9 to place 74th, while sophomore Devin Fahey finished right on Armijo's heels in 33:57.8 to take 75th.
Two more freshmen rounded out the scoring for the Cougars at their first South Central Regional, including redshirt freshman Nicholas Fernandes, who ran the 10K in 34:07.3 to place 80th. Jemal Wote crossed the line in 93rd at 34:36.8.
The Cougar men placed 14th overall with 372 points.
