Cougars return to College Station for NCAA’s first round
College Station, Texas – The NCAA Championship season is here and the Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Cross Country teams are set to compete at the NCAA South Central Regional on Friday in College Station, Texas.
ABOUT THE AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS
Teams from the South Central region will converge at Watts Cross Country Course on Friday morning for the regional. The women will open the action with a 6,000-meter race at 9:15 a.m., while the men will run their 10,000-meter race at 10:15 a.m.
The meet will serve as Houston's third this season at Watts Cross Country Course after competing in the Aggie Opener and the Texas A&M Invitational earlier this season.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The women will once again be led on the track by junior Meredith Sorensen, who has paced the Cougars through three of their five meets this season. Sorensen posted a top-10 finish at Watts Cross Country Course in the 6K at the Texas A&M Invitational before running a personal-best of 21:17.4 at the following meet, the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
Senior Britani Gonzales also returns to action for the Cougars in her first meet since finishing as Houston's top runner at The American Championships in October. Gonzales crossed the line in 23:45.87 to place 24th in the rainy conditions in New Orleans.
Jahnavi Schneider, who opened the season as Houston's fastest runner at the Aggie Opener in 15:14.9, will also be in action at the regional alongside Maddy Castleberry, Kristin Powell, Claudia Santos, Jennifer Dunlap and Regan Lobodzinski.
The men have seen four separate student-athletes finish first in their five meets this season, including freshman Gabriel Armijo who paced the Cougars with a 25:17.18 in the 8K at the Texas A&M Invitational, before leading the Cougars at The American Championships with a 37th-place finish in 29:22.21.
Redshirt freshman Nicholas Fernandes completed the Aggie Opener as the runner up with a time of 18:24.0, while Devin Fahey paced the team two weeks later with a time of 20:33.9 at the Rice Invitational to finish eighth.
Freshman Jemal Wote led the Cougars into the chute at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational, running in 85th with an 8K-time of 25:09.8, and he will be joined by Devin Vallejo-Bannister, Cooper Godfrey, Cameron Laverty and Nicholas Hamilton on the course on Friday.
