HOUSTON 3, MEMPHIS 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
After a slow start from the Cougars, in which they fell behind 4-1, Houston climbed its way back into the match and strung together a 10-2 run to eventually own an 18-12 advantage over Memphis. During that 12-point stretch, Houston pounded home six kills from four different players, which led to its six-point edge. The Cougars then took that momentum all the way to the 25-19 set victory to jump out to a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2
The two squads traded blows in the second set, having exchanged the lead seven times, while finding the score tied on nine other occasions. Once the Cougars found themselves trailing 10-7 in the set, Houston went on to score seven of the next nine points to claim a 14-12 lead, forcing Memphis to call its first timeout of the frame. The Cougars went on to finish out the set on an 11-5 run to cruise to a 25-17 victory and owned a 2-0 match lead at the intermission.
Set 3
Houston came out having built itself a commanding 15-9 lead, but Memphis managed to climb its way back into the set and took a one-point lead at the 19-18 mark. After the Cougars reclaimed the lead at 23-22, the Tigers went on to score the final three points to win the set 25-23 and force a fourth frame.
Set 4
The Cougars found themselves in a six-point hole early, trailing 10-6 to start the set, but a kill from junior outside hitter Faith Squier sparked a run for Houston that forced Memphis to call a timeout with the Cougars behind 11-8. That momentum continued, as Houston managed to take its first lead of the set at 15-14, where the Cougars never looked back from that point, winning the frame 25-20 to seal the 3-1 match victory.
