Cougars Fall Twice at Rice Tournament

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team suffered a pair of losses, falling 3-0 (17-25, 13-25, 21-25) to Yale and 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 21-25) to host Rice, as part of the Rice Adidas Invite II on Saturday inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
Freshman libero Katie Karbo was named to the all-tournament team, averaging 5.50 digs per set across the two matches.
With the decisions, the Cougars close their non-conference schedule with a 5-6 record.

UP NEXT
After playing four tournaments in the Houston area, the Cougars will open American Athletic Conference play with road matches at UConn (Sept. 23) and Temple (Sept. 25).
YALE 3, HOUSTON 0
Cougars Sarah Afflerbaugh, Megan Duncan and Brianna Lynch all recorded seven kills. Senior setter Keandra McCardell finished with 23 assists and Karbo posted 17 digs.
Yale's Megan Rasmussen led all with a match-high 13 kills, adding 11 digs in a double-double performance. Setter Franny Arnautou and libero Kate Swanson also recorded match-highs, registering 28 assists and 20 digs, respectfully.
The Bulldogs outhit Houston .355-.115, holding a 50-39 advantage in digs and 3-1 edge in blocks.
Both teams traded the opening few points, before Yale grabbed its first lead at 4-3. The Bulldogs built their lead to an eight-point advantage at 19-11 and held the margin for a 25-17 win.
Yale never trailed in taking second set, 25-13, to hold a 2-0 lead at the break.
Houston started strong in the third set, jumping out 4-1. However, Yale recovered and tied the set, 9-9, retaking the lead on the next serve. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to eight points, holding match point at 24-16. The Cougars attempted one last rally, going on a 5-0 run, before bowing out 25-21.
RICE 3, HOUSTON 0
Afflerbaugh and sophomore middle blocker Chenelle Walker each recorded nine kills. McCardell finished with 28 assists and Karbo posted 16 digs.
Rice's Leah Mikesky recorded a double-double with 16 digs and 13 kills. Chelsey Harris also finished with 13 kills, as the Owl's outhit Houston .186-.086. Rice led 62-47 in digs and held a 7-6 mark in blocks.
Senior middle blocker Hunter Wise led the Cougars with four kills in the opening set, as Houston fell 25-18.
The Cougars and Rice battled in the second set, tied 17-17, until a 3-0 run put the Owls out front. Rice's lead never fell below two points in riding a 25-21 win into intermission.
In the third set, Houston was held to a match-low .086 clip in falling 25-21 to close the match in straight sets.
