HOUSTON - Houston Volleyball suffered its first loss of the 2016 season, falling 3-1 (25-15, 19-25, 18-25, 26-28) to Weber State as part of the Marriott Houston Westchase Invitational on Saturday afternoon inside Sharp Gym.
Freshman right side Megan Duncan recorded her first career double-double for the Cougars (1-1), posting 12 kills and 11 digs against the Wildcats (2-0). Juniors Shelby Harper and Brianna Lynch also finished with double-figure kills, each recording 10. Harper, Chenelle Walker and Hunter Wise all finished with four block assists, while Lynch added eight digs.
Junior setter Keandra McCardell posted her first double-double of the season and 21st of her career, finishing with 28 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore setter Katie Krebs totaled 15 assists.
Freshman libero Katie Karbo anchored the back line with a match-high 20 digs, her second time to lead all players in as many matches.
The Cougars swung a .353 clip in cruising to a 25-15 opening-set victory. Unfortunately, Weber responded with a match-high .467 clip in the second set to take a 25-19 win and even the match, 1-1.
After being held to a season-low .065 clip in the third set, Houston battled in the fourth set. Down 9-5 out of a timeout, the Cougars flipped the script with a 8-4 run behind kills from Harper (2) and Wise (2), and four Weber attack errors to tie it 13-13. Big plays by both teams saw the match run to 26-26, until a Wildcat kill and Cougar attack error closed the set, 28-26, and the match, 3-1.
Houston will look to bounce back tonight, facing host Houston Baptist in the tournament finale at 7 p.m.
