Brian Barraza Named USTFCCCA All-Academic

NEW ORLEANS â€" Junior Brian Barraza has been named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Individual, while each of the Houston Cougar men's and women's cross country teams have been named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams for their performances on the course and in the classroom this season, the organization announced this week.
According to the USTFCCCA, In order for a student-athlete to qualify for the honor, they must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finished in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American at the national meet.
In November, Barraza became the first regional champion the University of Houston has ever seen after winning the 10K at the South Central Regional in College Station, Texas in 30:07.3. Barraza would go on to place 60th at his second straight NCAA Championships on Nov. 21. In the classroom, the El Paso, Texas native compiled a 3.79 cumulative GPA and was one of only 90 men's competitors named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team.
The award is the second of Barraza's career after also claiming the honor in 2015.
The Cougars also earned USTFCCCA Team All-Academic awards for each of its men's and women's squads for the second consecutive season. In order to qualify for the team honors, teams must have had at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA while also competing as a team at an NCAA Division I Regional Cross Country Meet.
Each Cougar squad made an appearance at the NCAA South Central Regional, while the men's team finished with a 3.29 cumulative GPA and the women earned a 3.23 cumulative GPA to take home the honors.
