Cougars Fall 3-0 to UCF to Close Season

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team wrapped up its 2016 season falling 3-0 (26-28, 25-27, 20-25) to UCF on Friday afternoon inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars finish the year 5-26 overall and 0-20 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Knights close at 23-10 overall and 13-7 in league action. The loss also marked the final match for two seniors â€" defensive specialist Marisa Guzman and middle blocker Hunter Wise.
Freshman outside hitter Megan Duncan led Houston with 14 kills. Junior setter Keandra McCardell tallied 21 assists and eight digs, while sophomore setter Katie Krebs finished 14 assists. Freshman libero Katie Karbo anchored the back row with 11 digs.
UCF's Jale Hervey posted 17 kills and 12 digs in a double-double effort. Setters Farah Rajae and Miranda Watkins collected 23 and 15 assists, while Kia Bright and Jordan Pingel recorded 13 and 12 digs, respectfully.
The Knights outhit Houston .215-.185 and held a 49-47 edge in digs. The Cougars led 44-40 in kills and tied UCF 6-6 in blocks.
Houston jumped out front 6-1 in the opening set highlighted by a pair of service aces from Karbo. Unfortunately, the lead didn't last as the Knights rallied to tie the set at 8-8. Both teams traded points to move the score to 26-26 until UCF got consecutive kills to close the set with a 28-26 victory.
The second set proved to be more of the same with the two teams trading points deep into the set. Tied 25-25, a kill from Hervey kill and Houston attack error gave the Knights a 27-25 edge and 2-0 at intermission.
Tied 8-8 in the third set, two attack errors allowed UCF to pull ahead. The Knights never trailed the rest of the way en route to the 25-20 final to close the match in straight sets.
