Cougars Fall to Tulane, 3-1

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball team fell 3-1 (19-25, 18-25, 27-25, 12-25) to Tulane on Wednesday night inside Athletics/Alumni Center.
With the decision, the Cougars dropped to 5-15 overall and 0-9 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Green Wave improved to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in league action.
Junior outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh posted her third double-double of the season and sixth overall of her career in a 16-dig, 12-kill effort. The 16 digs also marks a career-high for the Austin native.
Freshman outside hitter Faith Squier led Houston attack with a career-high 15 kills.
Setters Keandra McCardell and Katie Krebs finished with 21 and 17 assists, respectfully. Freshman libero Katie Karbo recorded 15 digs, while freshman outside hitter Megan Duncan dug up a career-high 14 balls. Duncan and senior middle blocker Hunter Wise each recorded three blocks.
Tulane's Sarah Ray posted 18 kills and 14 digs in a double-double effort. Tea Juric and Dayna Kern finished with 11 and 10 kills, respectfully. Setter Justine Bowers amassed 48 assists. Libero Sarah Strasner registered 28 digs.
The Green Wave outhit Houston .294-.159, leading 62-48 in kills and 80-70 in digs. Both teams totaled five blocks.
Tulane took the first two sets 25-19 and 25-18 to hold a 2-0 lead over the Cougars at intermission.
Both teams traded 3-0 runs to open the third set and sat tied 23-23 late in the stanza. Two attack errors and two kills pushed the score to 25-all, before the Green Wave suffered back-to-back attack errors to give the set to Houston, 27-25.
In the fourth set, Tulane jumped out to a 10-0 lead in cruising to the 25-12 final and 3-1 decision.
