Volleyball Sweeps Competition Friday

HOUSTON - The University of Houston Volleyball team swept competition in six straight sets as the Cougars went undefeated on day one of the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup.
Houston improves to 9-2 on the season, the best start for the program since the 1989 season when the Cougars opened with a 12-2 before Southwest Conference play.
Freshman Brookah Palmer led the Cougars with 26 kills in six sets with two aces, and 19 digs. She posted her fourth double-double of the season against Alabama A&M. Junior Hunter Wise followed with 22 kills of her own.
HOUSTON 3, ALABAMA A&M 0
Houston wrapped up day one of the tournament with a three-set win (25-21, 25-22, 25-21) over Alabama A&M in front of a packed house.
Both teams battled back and forth in all three sets. Houston held the lead for most of set one, but the Bulldogs would back down and ended up tying it several times. Alabama A&M fought throughout sets two and three and took the lead, but Houston wasn't going to give up. The Cougars came back and won 25-22 in set two and 25-21 in set three to seal the win and the sweep.
Palmer recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs against the Bulldogs. Wise followed with 12 kills, hitting .333, with two blocks. Redshirt freshman Chenelle Walker was almost unstoppable down the middle as she tallied a hitting average of .625.
Alabama A&M's Ashundria McNeal recorded 24 kills, hitting .444, and eight digs against the Cougars.
HOUSTON 3, NICHOLLS STATE 0
The Cougars opened the Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup with a 3-0 sweep over Nicholls State (25-16, 27-25, 25-18) Friday afternoon.
Palmer led Houston with 12 kills, hitting .333, while junior Hunter Wise followed with 10 kills (.304).
The Cougars front row defense posted a season best 10.0 team blocks led by redshirt freshman Chenelle Walker. The 6-foot-1 middle blocker tallied six blocks (1-5) in the three-set match.
Houston dominated the first set, picking up a 25-16 win over the Colonels. Set two was a battle between the two teams as they went point-for-point. Service errors played a huge factor in the set while both teams had success while hitting.
