SUGAR LAND, Texas - University of Houston freshman Maddy Rayner fired a 1-under-par 71 in the morning round and finished the first day of the HBU Husky Invitational in 17th place at 155 on Monday at Riverbend Country Club.
Rayner enjoyed the second sub-par round of her young career, trailing only the 69 she posted in the Final Round at The Alamo Invitational on Oct. 28, 2014.
She was one of three Cougar freshmen competing as individuals on the 6,084-yard, par-72 course during this recent addition to the team's schedule. Tatiana Pineda was tied for 22nd at 158, while Huntsville High product Courtney Tibiletti stood in 49th at 171.
With only three student-athletes competing as individuals, the Cougars will not be eligible for the team championship. The Final Round tees off Tuesday morning.
Lamar held the first-day team lead with a score of 599, while No. 5 Lynn stood in second at 605. Sam Houston State (613), host Houston Baptist (614) and McLennan Community College (627) rounded out the top-5 leaders.
Individually, Lynn's Jessica Bradley and McLennan Community College's Fabiana Salazar were tied for the lead at even-par 144. Lamar's Wenny Chang stood in third at 147 with Sarah Black of Sam Houston State checking in at fourth at 148.
This marks the second straight season that the Cougars will compete at the HBU Husky Invitational. A year ago, current junior Raegan Bremer was the only player to post a sub-par score in the Final Round with a 70 to earn medalist honors and capture the first individual crown in program history.
UP NEXT
Following the HBU Husky Invitational, the Cougars return to action as a team on April 10-12 when they compete at the Dallas Athletic Club/SMU Invitational.
