SAN DIEGO - The University of Houston Women's Golf program closed out its stay at the SDSU Farms Invitational with a 3-2 loss to Long Beach State on Wednesday afternoon in the consolation bracket title match at the Farms Golf Club.
After dropping their First-Round match to Colorado on a tiebreaker, the Cougars rallied with 4-1 wins over UC Irvine and Michigan on Tuesday to advance to the consolation title match. Senior Courtney Ferguson and junior Raegan Bremer each posted wins against the 49ers in the Final Round for their third singles wins in four matches, joining freshman Megan Thothong with that impressive total.
Bremer wasted little time in setting the tone for her match on the way to a 7 and 5 victory over Janelle Sua, the Cougars' biggest singles win of the tournament. The Anaheim, Calif., native sank two birdies with four pars and a bogey to win each of the first seven holes and never led by fewer than six holes the rest of the way.
Ferguson enjoyed a 3 and 1 win over Shawnee Martinez for her third straight singles victory. The Clear Lake, Texas, native fell 1 down through the first nine holes but squared the match with a par on the par-4 first hole. She grabbed her first lead with a birdie on the par-5 third hole, but Martinez squared the match with a birdie on the next hole.
From there, Ferguson made par and took advantage of a pair of Martinez bogeys to earn the Cougars' second point of the match.
Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Cougars would get. Yuka Kajiki dropped a 4 and 3 decision to Chaewon Park, while sophomore Emily Gilbreth fell 1 down to Kassidy Teare. Thothong suffered her first loss of the SDSU Farms Invitational with a 3 and 2 setback against Savannah Knox.
Tennessee captured the team championship with a 3.5-1.5 win over Colorado.
