HOUSTON 4, UC IRVINE 1
In the morning round against UC Irvine, the Cougars rolled to the victory over the Anteaters. Ferguson was the big winner with a 5 and 4 victory against Kristin Henno, but Kajiki was a close second at 4 and 2 over Breanne Jones.
Thothong earned a 2 up win over Kaley In, and Bremer claimed a 1 up victory over Camille Wagg.
Starting on No. 12, Ferguson fell behind 1 down just three holes into her match but sank five straight pars to win each of the next five holes and build an insurmountable lead. The Clear Lake, Texas, native lost only one hole in the match (par-5 3rd) from there but made par on the next hole to win that hole and regain a 5 up lead.
Kajiki won each of her first two holes for a quick lead. Although she lost the par-5 12th hole, she rallied to win the very next hole and then pushed her lead to 3 up with a par of No. 15 and birdied the par-5 18th hole for a 4-up advantage.
Thothong won her second straight match to start her day but had to wait until her back nine to lock it down. After being All Square through the first two holes, Thothong fell behind with a bogey on the par-4 first hole. Both players made birdies on the par-3, second hole, but Thothong squared the match with a birdie on the par-5 third hole and then took the lead for good with a par on the par-4, fourth hole.
The Dallas native built a 2 up lead on the par-3 fifth hole with her fourth and final birdie of the round. In took advantage of a Thothong bogey on the par-4 seventh hole to move to within 1 down but made bogey on the final hole for the final margin of victory.
Bremer took advantage of three straight bogeys by Wagg midway through the front nine to build a 2 up lead. Although Wagg sank a birdie on the par-3 16th hole and another on the par-5 18th hole to square the match, Bremer made par on the par-4 first hole to regain a 1 up lead and then matched her opponent the rest of the way to seal the win.
HOUSTON 4, MICHIGAN 1
In the afternoon round, the Cougars continued their stellar play to advance to the consolation title match. For the second straight match, Ferguson was the big winner with a 6 and 4 victory against Kathy Lim, while Thothong claimed a 4 and 2 win over Megan Kim. Kajiki enjoyed a 4 and 3 victory over Emily White and Bremer snared a 2 up win over Grace Choi.
With the match All Square through the first eight holes, Kajiki took advantage of two back-to-back birdies and a pair of pars to win four straight holes and cruise to her second victory of the day.
After building a 1 up lead through the first five holes, Ferguson parred No. 15 for a 2 up lead and then closed out her front nine with an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. She then opened her back nine with a par on the par-4 first hole for a 5 up lead and then made par on Nos. 4 and 5 to clinch the match.
Thothong jumped out to a 2 up lead through her first two holes, thanks to a birdie and an eagle on the par-4 11th hole, and never led by fewer than two holes the rest of the way. She led the Cougars in the Third Round with four birdies and an eagle.
Although she bogeyed her first hole against the Wolverines, Bremer won the hole after Choi double-bogeyed. The two players matched scores on each hole from there until Bremer grabbed a 2-up lead in the par-4 17th hole. The Anaheim, Calif., native saw her lead cut to one hole after bogeying the par-5 third hole but won the next hole and eventually the match.
