Women's Golf Falls in SDSU Farms Invitational First Round

SAN DIEGO - University of Houston stars Emily Gilbreth and Megan Thothong each posted match-play victories during Monday's First Round against Colorado at the SDSU Farms Invitational, but it would not be enough as the Cougars failed to advance due to tiebreakers.
Both teams tied at 2.5-2.5 after five individual matches, but Colorado advanced in the Championship bracket due to the Buffalos' 5-3 margin of victory.
Gilbreth was a 2 up winner against Natalie Vivaldi, while Thothong enjoyed a 1 up victory against Brittany Fan on the 6,237-yard, par-72 course at The Farms Golf Club.
Senior Courtney Ferguson halved her match against Alexis Keating, while junior Raegan Bremer dropped a 2 and 1 decision to Esther Lee and freshman Yuka Kajiki fell 3 and 1 to Jamie Olekslew.
With the loss, the Cougars will face No. 16 seed UC Irvine on Tuesday morning. Houston will play its second match of the day on Tuesday afternoon with the opponent based on the morning results.

Gilbreth went down to the wire in her First-Round match. The Bellaire, Texas, native did not grab her first lead until making par on the par-5 12th hole. . However, she quickly gave up the lead with a bogey on the par-4 13th hole and fell 1 down with another bogey on the par-3 14th hole.
Fortunately, Gilbreth settled down to sink birdies on two of her final four holes. She squared the match with a birdie on the par-4 15th hole and took the lead for good with a par on the par-4 17th hole. With a birdie on the par-5 18th hole, she clinched the Cougars' second point of the match.
Thothong never trailed in the match and was up three holes through eight before Fan rallied to square the match with a birdie on the par-5 12th hole. After each player parred the next four holes, the Dallas native took the lead with a birdie on the par-4 17th hole, which Fan double-bogeyed.
Both players recorded par on the 18th hole to seal the win for Thothong.
