JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Playing a near flawless round, University of Houston freshman Megan Thothong fired a 68 to capture the individual title at the UNF Collegiate and lead the Cougars to the first team championship in program history on Tuesday afternoon.
Starting on No. 2, Thothong began her Final Round on the 6,050-yard, par-72 course at Jacksonville Golf and Country Club with four birdies through her first five holes.
As a team, the Cougars posted the lowest round of the day for the second time at this event with a total of 291 on Tuesday afternoon. With a score of 885, the Cougars finished 15 strokes in front of No. 50 Texas. Delaware (907), Samford (916), host North Florida (920), Jacksonville (921), Western Carolina (929), McNeese State (933), Charleston Southern (934) and Eastern Kentucky (935) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
"This is special. It just shows that we are doing the right thing with our process with our young women," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "To win a tournament in your first year is not something we expected, but we showed signs in the fall. This was a pretty special day for our program."
After slipping with a bogey on No. 7, the Dallas native answered with six straight pars and then drained three straight birdies on Nos. 14-16. Although Thothong - whose last name is pronounced Toe-Tong - endured a double-bogey 7 on her final hole of the tournament, she finished with a career-low and Houston-season-low 68 and two-day total of 1-over-par 217.
"Megan made some really good puts and her putter got hot. The course played harder today, but, when the going gets tough, Megan is at her best," Chadwell said. "She was never in jeopardy, and her start and Emily's start helped us get going. Her round was spectacular."
Although the Cougars are competing in their second year of existence under Chadwell and assistant coach Lucy Nunn, this is the first season the team is eligible to win team titles. A year ago, Houston played with three student-athletes competing as individuals per NCAA rules.
Sophomore Emily Gilbreth stood atop the individual leaderboard for much of the day with four birdies and only one bogey through her first 12 holes. Although she endured a bogey and double bogey on her final six holes, the Bellaire, Texas, native tied for second at 218 for a career-best finish.
Gilbreth tied with Texas' and 65th-ranked player Bertine Strauss for second. Jacksonville's Jessica Welch finished fourth at 219, while Sydney Needham of Samford placed fifth at 221.
Houston junior Raegan Bremer finished with a score of 222 to tie for sixth, while freshman Yuka Kajiki placed eighth at 224 to join Thothong and Gilbreth among the top-11 individual leaders.
Freshman Tatiana Pineda finished 19th with a score of 228, while senior Courtney Ferguson tied for 30th at 233.
