Cougars Fall to SMU in American Play

HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team fell to SMU, 68-51, on Saturday in American Athletic Conference action at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Tyler Gilbert led the Cougars with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Bianca Winslow and Jessieka Palmer scored seven points each.
Houston trailed throughout the game but came to life midway through the second half, launching a 9-1 run that closed the SMU lead to 46-38 with 9:27 on the clock. But they could not get closer, and the road team earned the victory.
Saturday's game featured the largest home crowd of the season at Hofheinz Pavilion. With "H" Day on the Cougar calendar and an in-state rival in the building, Houston fans did a tremendous job of creating an exciting atmosphere in Hofheinz.

The Mustangs opened the second half on a 10-4 run, stretching their 10-point halftime lead to 45-29 with 14:15 remaining in the game. Houston gradually chipped in to the lead but could not draw even before the final buzzer.

Houston: Gilbert led the Cougars in scoring for the sixth time this season and hit double-figures for the 12th time in her career. Marche' Amerson added team highs of three assists and three steals.
SMU: Keely Froling scored a game-high 13 points, while Destynee Hives-McCray came up with 10 points off the bench.

- The Mustangs shot 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the field. Houston finished at 28.3 percent (13-for-46).
- The Cougars set a season high with 20 made free throws and shot 71.4 percent (20-for-28) from the free throw line.
- Houston finished with 10 steals, one shy of a season best. Palmer and Alecia Smith each grabbed two.
- Smith drained a team-high two 3-pointers, reaching double-digits in the category for the 11th time this season.
- Winslow was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe.
- SMU led at halftime, 35-25. Gilbert paced the Coogs at the break with six points.
NEWS & NOTES |
- Saturday saw the returns of Demetria Foreman and Moesha Kinard from injuries. Kinard scored five points and Foreman added four.
- Amerson's three-steal effort was one shy of a career high.
- Gilbert notched her lone block of the game at the 16:45 mark of the second half. With the rejection, she moved into seventh on Houston's single-season blocks leaderboard, with 58.
- Houston still holds a 31-22 edge over their in-state rivals.
