HOUSTON – Eight days before the Pre-Nationals meet in Louisville, Ky., the Houston Cougar men’s and women’s cross country teams used the HBU Cross Country Open to tune up their races heading into the post season, on Friday.
The Houston women competed in a 5K race, while the men ran the 4-mile in Sugar Land, while the majority of Houston’s athletes competed unattached in the event.
Sophomore Mackenzie Illari was Houston’s top finisher competing attached for the women after finishing the race in 21:16.21 to finish 28th. Junior Justin Barrett was the Cougar men’s top attached finisher in 36th place after running 23:02.82.
Since most of the Cougars competed unattached Houston did not register a team score, however Texas A&M swept the men’s and women’s overall scores, with their women finishing with 18 points, and the Aggie men scoring 27 points.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars travel east to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the NCAA Pre-National meet on Saturday, Oct. 17 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The race will be held on the same course as the NCAA Cross Country Championships in late November.
