Cougars to Compete at HBU Cross Country Open

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar men's and women's cross country teams return to the Houston area to compete in the HBU Cross Country Open, hosted by Houston Baptist, on Friday, Oct. 9.
The HBU Cross Country Open will be held at Sugar Land Memorial Park, and the women will compete in a 3-mile race beginning at 5 p.m., while the men will follow with a 4-mile competition at 5:30 p.m.
Houston is fresh off a 13-day break from competition after last running at the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 26. Junior Brian Barraza claimed the individual championship at the Texas A&M Invite, while the men finished seventh overall and the women finished 12th.
The win was the second in back-to-back competitions for Barraza who also claimed the individual title at the Rice Invitational on Sept. 11. The El Paso, Texas native was named American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week on Sept. 6 for his performance in College Station.
The award marked the second of the season for Houston after junior Maddie Brown claimed the honor following the HBU Season Opener to begin the season. Brown claimed the individual championship en route to leading the Cougars to a first place overall finish.
Brown has been the Cougars' top-finishing women's runner in all three meets for the Cougars in 2015. Following the season opener, Brown finished eighth at the Rice Invitational, before placing 47th at the Texas A&M Invitational.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars travel to Louisville, Ky., to compete in the Pre-Nationals meet beginning at 8:30 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 17. Houston will compete on the same course that will host the NCAA Cross Country Championships in late November.
