Houston Volleyball Upsets Temple in Five

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. â€" Houston Volleyball picked up a huge five-set win (25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 14-25, 15-13) to upset second place Temple Friday night.
The Cougars improved to 15-6 overall, 5-4 in the American Athletic Conference while Temple drops to 15-6, 6-3 in conference play.
Houston jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 win in set one. Temple quickly responded with a 25-14 win over the Cougars to tie the match 1-1 heading into the half.
The Cougars came out of the half with a 25-22 win to take a 2-1 lead in the set. Temple tied the match 2-2 and forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-14 win in set four.
Houston jumped out to an 8-6 lead in the final set before the teams switched sides. The Owls tied up the set 12-12 with a double block but the Cougars were relentless as they scored two straight with a kill from Sarah Afflerbaugh and a Courtney Smith service ace. Out of a Temple timeout, Houston sealed the 15-13 win with a kill from Chenelle Walker.
Junior right side Hunter Wise led the Cougars with a .579 hitting percentage, 11 kills and two blocks while freshman hitter Brookah Palmer recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 18 kills, 10 digs and two aces. Sophomore transfer Shelby Harper followed with nine kills, hitting .200 against the Temple defense.
Senior libero Olivia O'Dell led the Cougars with 21 digs in the five-set match.
NEXT SERVE
Houston continues its road stand with a noon match against UConn on Sunday in Storrs, Conn. The Cougars return home for a match against UCF on Friday, Oct. 30 and Sunday, Nov. 1, against USF.
