Cougars Head to Pre-National Meet in Louisville

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar men's and women's cross country teams will begin their post-season run as they head to the Pre-National Meet in Louisville, Ky., on Saturday, Oct. 17.
The meet will be held at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park, which will also host the NCAA Championships Meet on Nov. 21, and will consist of an 8K for the men and a 6K for the women. The men will compete in the seeded competition beginning at 8:30 a.m., CT, while the women will race in the unseeded race, which kicks off at 10:30 a.m.
Houston began the 2015 season at the HBU Season Opener, where the men and women swept the meet titles. Junior Maddie Brown claimed the women's individual championship after running an 11:56, while junior Edwin Munoz was the men's top finisher, placing third in 15:54.53 in his first race with the Cougars.
The following week, junior Brian Barraza took the individual championship at the 40th Annual Rice Invitational. Barraza ran the event in 18:33.72 to claim the title, while Brown was again the top finisher on the women's side in 16:57.23. The men would go on to finish second overall, and the women would place third.
After a 15-day break, Barraza again claimed an individual championship, this time crossing the line first at the Texas A&M Invitational, running a 23:28.5. For the third consecutive event, Brown finished first for the Cougars with a 22:02.3 to finish 50th.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars will take a week off before traveling to Grimesland, N.C., to compete at the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Oct. 31. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Last season, the Houston men finished third at the American Championships, while the women improved from their 2013 race to finish sixth. Then a sophomore, Barraza was Houston's top finisher, placing fourth in 24:53, while then freshman Ebony White took 16th on the women's side in 21:43.
