GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Houston junior Courtney Ferguson posted a score of 73 during Friday's opening round at the SunTrust Gator Invitational to stand in a tie for 16th place.
Competing on the 6,002-yard, par-70 Mark Bostick Golf Course, Ferguson overcame a slow start to rise through the individual rankings for the rest of the round. Staring on No. 10, the Clear Lake, Texas, native battled through a pair of double bogeys on her front nine, playing her final 11 holes at even par.
Teammate Raegan Bremer stood in a tie for 67th after posting an 81.
Florida's Karolina Vickova was the only player to shoot under par Friday and led with a 69. Teammate Camilla Hedberg, Elizabeth Brightwell (Virginia) and Ellen Ceresko (Penn State) were tied for second at 70, while Marijosse Navarro (Texas A&M) and Andrea Vilarasau (Arizona) were tied for fifth at 71.
With only two student-athletes competing as individuals, Houston was not eligible for the team championship. Now in its first year of existence, Houston Women's Golf will field a full team for the 2014-15 season.
No. 30 Ohio State and No. 42 Florida State stood atop the team leaderboard at 292.
