PALM COAST, Fla. - Three University of Houston Women's Golfers stood among the top-25 individual leaders following the American Athletic Conference Championships First Round on Sunday afternoon.
Battling cool, misty conditions on the 6,235-yard, par-72 Ocean Course at Hammock Beach Resort and Golf Club, sophomore Raegan Bremer fought through her first 18 holes and was tied for ninth place after shooting a 78.
Junior Courtney Ferguson and freshman Emily Gilbreth were tied for 24th after each posting an 82.
Ferguson, a native of Clear Lake, Texas, drained a birdie on the 365-yard, par-4 ninth hole to cap her front nine on what would later score as the toughest hole on the course. Gilbreth converted her lone birdie of the round on the 158-yard, par-3 fourth hole as the youngest member of the Cougars' lineup.
No. 18 UCF held the team lead after posting a score of 307, four strokes ahead of Cincinnati. No. 38 Louisville (314), SMU (315), Memphis (319), USF (324) and Rutgers (336) rounded out the rest of the field.
Competing in its first year of existence with only three student-athletes competing, Houston Women's Golf is not eligible for the team title. The Cougars will field a complete team in 2014-15 under head coach Gerrod Chadwell and assistant coach Mary Michael Maggio.
Individually, Cincinnati's Olivia Dose stood atop the leaderboard with a First-Round 74. Teammate Andrea Malek and Louisville's Emily Haas were tied for second at 75, while Jenny Haglund (SMU) and Ashley Holder (UCF) were tied for fourth at 76.
The Second Round continues Monday morning off No. 1. Gilbreth will start the Cougars' day at 8:10 a.m., with Ferguson (8:20 a.m.) and Bremer (8:30 a.m.) to follow. The Cougars will compete in threesomes with SMU and Memphis.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday morning. Fans can follow live scoring by visiting Golfstat.com and following the appropriate links or by clicking here.
