Houston Volleyball Downs East Carolina in Five

| HOUSTON - Well-balanced play by Houston Volleyball forged the way to a 3-2 win (25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-9) over East Carolina Friday night.
Houston improved to 13-13 on the season, 5-9 in the American Athletic Conference while the Pirates dropped to 11-12, 3-10 in conference play.
Houston took a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 win in set one. The Cougars were down 16-13 in the first set, but four attack errors by the Pirates pushed Houston to a 17-16 lead and an East Carolina timeout. Both teams went point-for-point until Houston ended up on top.
However, ECU took a 2-1 lead with wins in the second and third set. Houston wouldn't give up as they battled for a 25-21 win in set four, forcing a decisive fifth set. The Cougars outhit ECU in every set including set four when they recorded a .400 hitting average with 15 kills and only three errors.
Defense also played a major role in the match as four Cougars picked up double-digit digs.
Senior libero Natalie Keck recorded her second consecutive 20-dig match as she tallied 24 digs against the Pirates. She is only 19 digs away from her 2,000th career dig.
Freshman setter Keandra McCardell recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 36 assists and 10 digs. Freshman outside hitter Sarah Afflerbaugh also recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 kills (.200 hitting average) and 11 digs.
Cortney Warren led the Cougar offense with 24 kills, hitting .311, four digs and three blocks. Senior middle blocker Kaiti Waters also had a stellar night as she recorded a season best of 10 kills (.381 hitting average) and four blocks. She also scored 14.5 points of the Cougars 83.0 points scored.

Houston enjoys the rest of the weekend off before returning to the court Friday. The Cougars face Memphis on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. Houston meets conference rival Cincinnati on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m.
