LAFAYETTE, La. - Clinching the tournament title in undefeated fashion, the University of Houston volleyball team defeated host team University of Louisiana-Lafayette in four sets (19-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-18) in the final match of the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Tournament Saturday night.
Houston (6-1) continues on a three-game win streak, while the Ragin' Cajuns (5-2) fall in their second match of the season.
UL-Lafayette took the first set, 25-19, hitting a .353 average compared to the Cougars .257 hitting percentage. Houston stepped up their game, winning sets two, three and four to take the match. It was the first time this season the Cougars came back to win after dropping the first set.
Freshman Sarita Mikals led the team with her second double-double (22 kills and 10 digs) of the season.Along with Mikals, setter Sophie Paine recorded 49 assists and 13 digs, her first career double-double. Cortney Warren notched 12 kills, a .312 hitting percentage.
After Houston claimed the tournament trophy, three players were named to the all-tournament team. Mikals and Paine were among the four selected while junior captain Natalie Keck (16 digs, 1 assist) earned the MVP of the tournament.
UP NEXT
The Cougars close out the road tournaments as they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for the TCU Nike Invitational Sept. 13-14. The team will play two games each day starting with Grambling State at 2 p.m. and host team TCU at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The following day, Houston faces Ole Miss at noon and Stephen F. Austin at 5 p.m. From there, Houston will host its season home opener Sept. 20-21 during the 2013 Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup.
