Men's Golf Finishes Third at Golfweek Conference Challenge

BURLINGTON, Iowa - For the second straight round, University of Houston senior James Ross posted a 3-under-par 69 to finish at 214 and move into a tie for seventh at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

Ross was one of three Cougars to finish among the tournament's top-25 individual leaders, joining sophomore Blair Hamilton (216, t-13th) and junior Roman Robledo (217, t-21st).

After shooting 76 in the opening round Sunday morning, Ross rebounded nicely in the final two rounds. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native opened his round with three birdies on his front nine and four through the first 10.

Although he fought through a bogey and double bogey on the back nine, Ross added two more birdies on the final eight holes and tied for the tournament lead with 15 birdies overall.

"James came back with two really solid rounds. He became more comfortable on the greens," Dismuke said. "As a result, he holed more putts and hit a lot of quality shots."

As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 3-under-par 285 in the final round and finished with a score of 866 to place third for the second straight tournament.

Oklahoma won the team title with a score of 857 and held off a late charge from Virginia Tech, which posted a final-round team score of 10-under-par 278, to finish at 861. After the Cougars, New Mexico (867), LSU (872), Iowa (875), Winthrop (875), Central Arkansas (876), Jacksonville State (881) and Arizona (892) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.

"We had a decent performance. Everyone chipped in, and we managed to put together a pretty decent score," Dismuke said. "We are really close to playing some good golf. We just need to clean up a few things and make a few putts."

Individually, LSU's Stewart Jolly and Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent tied for medalist honors at 6-under-par 210 and were unable to break the tie with a playoff due to travel plans. Vincent posted the lowest round of the tournament with a final-round 64, thanks to five birdies and an eagle on his final six holes.

Ross was one of three Cougars to finish among the top-25 leaders. Hamilton used a steady effort throughout the final round, posting four birdies with only a pair of bogeys, on the way to his second straight top-15 finish to open the season.

Robledo added five birdies in his final round Tuesday, including one on the 545-yar, par-5 18th hole to cap his even-par round.

Seniors Curtis Reed and Wesley McClain tied for 37th at 223.

Following the Golfweek Conference Challenge, the Cougars will compete at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic for the fifth straight season. A year ago, the Cougars tied for second at this event with four individuals among the top-21 leaders.
