BRYAN, Texas - Sophomore Raegan Bremer posted a 54-hole score of 225 to tie for 22nd and lead the University of Houston Women's Golf program at the "Mo"Morial Invitational.
The Cougars combined for a three-woman score of 225 on Wednesday, their best single-day team total of the event. With that in mind, head coach Gerrod Chadwell said he was pleased with his team's effort all week and especially in the final round.
"All in all, it was probably the best day. It was the best day we put together for all three scores," Chadwell said. "Good teams show signs of progressions like that, and we did. It was a good week for the first time out.
Although she had only one birdie in the final round, Bremer played steady throughout the day for the program's highest finish on the 6,206-yard, par-72 course at The Traditions. The Anaheim, Calif., native wrapped up her stay at the tournament with a final-round 76.
"Raegan was pretty solid all day, and that was great to see," Chadwell said. "She made a good showing this week."
Freshman Emily Gilbreth - who was making her collegiate debut - tied with junior Courtney Ferguson for the team lead with three birdies in the final round and drained the program's first eagle on her final hole of the tournament, the 330-yard, par-4 13th hole.
Gilbreth, a Bellaire native and product of Bellaire High, posted the team's best round of the day Wednesday with a 74 and finished in a tie for 37th with a score of 231.
"Emily finished her round off with a bang. For a freshman, she was very impressive," Chadwell said. "Under the bright lights, she competed well and had two really good rounds."
Like Gilbreth, Ferguson ended her stay at the tournament on a high note, posting birdies on each of her final two holes to finish in a tie for 31st at 230.
"Courtney battled back," Chadwell said. "She grinded out a pretty tough round but closed out well."
This was the first tournament in school history after the University Board of Regents approved the addition of the program in the spring. With only four team members in 2013-14, the Cougars will not be eligible for team titles at any tournaments in which they compete.
Houston will field a complete team for the 2014-15 season.
Haley Mills won the individual title with a score of 3-under-par 213 to finish four strokes ahead of teammate Sarah Harris and Texas A&M's Katerina Ruzickova.
Kentucky won the team title with a score of 872, 11 strokes better than Virginia. UCF (885), East Carolina (893) and host Texas A&M (894) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
UP NEXT
Following the "Mo"Morial Invitational, the Cougars will compete at the Cardinal Cup, hosted by Louisville, on Monday and Tuesday in Louisville, Ky.
