BRYAN, Texas - Sophomore Raegan Bremer and freshman Emily Gilbreth each posted 75s Wednesday to lead the University of Houston Women's Golf program during the second round of the "Mo"Morial Invitational.
With the Women's Team competing for the first time in school history this week, Bremer led the Cougars with four birdies in Tuesday's round at The Traditions Club. After a steady front nine which featured one birdie, the Anaheim, Calif., native fought through a roller-coaster back nine to lead the Cougars.
After posting a double bogey and two bogeys through the first five holes of her final nine, Bremer birdied the par-5 15th hole on the 6,206-yard, par-72 course and added her fourth and final birdie of the day on the par-4 17th hole.
Raegan got off to a good start. She had a couple of mistakes midway through the round but finished strong," Chadwell said. "She fought all day long and salvaged a good round."
Bremer stood at 149 through the first 36 holes, good enough to tie for 15th place.
Gilbreth drained three birdies in the second round of her collegiate career, including two on the back nine, to move into a tie for 45th with a two-day score of 157.
"Emily had an unbelievable short game today, and that's the toughest part of this course. She didn't hit the ball as well as she could off the tee, so for her to not hit that well and post that score is pretty good for a freshman on a course like this," Chadwell said. "I was proud of what Emily did today."
Junior Courtney Ferguson shot 82 on Tuesday and dropped into a tie for 41st with a score of 155.
Battling swirling, gusty winds all day, scores rose for all teams on the course on Tuesday.
"Conditions were much tougher for everyone," head coach Gerrod Chadwell said.
Kentucky moved into the team lead with a score of 586, eight strokes ahead of Virginia and host Texas A&M. UCF (596), Florida State (596), Texas A&M "B" (613), UTSA (614), Rollins College (622) and Redlands Community College (640) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Because the Cougars are only competing with three student-athletes, they are not eligible for the team championship.
Kentucky's Haley Mills maintained her individual lead at 142, two strokes ahead of teammate Sarah Harris and Texas A&M's Katerina Ruzickova.
