Cross Country Set For Rice Invitational Friday

HOUSTON - After a weeks rest, the University of Houston men's and women's cross country teams are ready for the 38th annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational meet on the Rice University campus set Friday.
The women's 4,000-meter race will kick off the event starting at 6:15 p.m. followed by the men's 6,000-meter run at 6:45 p.m. The course is located on the university's intramural fields on Rice Boulevard between Sunset/Main and Greenbriar. Parking is free and is located in "West Lot 4."
Teams from Houston Baptist, Lamar, McNeese State, Texas A&M, Texas Southern, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin and host Rice are among the competitors running this weekend.
Squad members began the 2013 season at the Baylor Twilight Invitational on Aug. 30 where freshman Brian Barraza finished on top with a time of 18:19.9. He led the field, crossing the line in front of a top senior from the University of Texas. The team finished fifth overall. Amber Hawkins was the top finisher for the women's team. She placed 23rd overall with a time of 14:47.3. The women finished sixth overall.

Following this week's meet, the Cougars travel to Austin for the Rouge Grass Routes Grand Prix scheduled Sept. 27.
