PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - In the second conference road trip of the season, the University of Houston volleyball team fell to rival Temple in four sets (16-25, 27-29, 25-19, 21-25) Friday evening during Temple's Dig Pink night.
Houston falls to 10-9 overall, 3-2 in the American Athletic Conference while Temple improves to 12-4, 3-1 in conference play.
The Owls started the match very strong, outhitting the Cougars 14-7 in kills. Temple took a 1-0 advantage over Houston with a 25-16 win. Houston woke up in the second set with a stronger defense and forced extra points. However, the Cougars couldn't hold on as Temple went up 2-0 going into the half.
The third set was a game changer as Houston came out strong, with 16 kills on 42 attempts and allowing only six attacking errors. The Owls seemed a bit lethargic going into the third set as Houston took off with a 25-19 win. Houston couldn't hold on to the match as Temple dominated the fourth and final set.
"We just had too many errors against [Temple] and our defense seemed to be lagging behind the play," head coach Kaddie Platt said. "As a team, we must focus on playing point by point and not worrying about the previous play. We need to just forget it and move on."
Freshman Sarita Mikals led the Cougars with 15 kills and 15 digs, recording her seventh double double of the season. Junior Cortney Warren recorded 20 kills for the Cougar offense, a .255 hitting percentage. This match was the third time the outside hitter recorded 20 or more kills this season.
Three Temple Owls recorded double figure kills against the Cougars including senior hitter Gabriella Matautia who notched 14 kills and 10 digs against the Cougars.
