HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team lost its second match of the State Farm Classic to No. 7 Illinois, 3-1 (10-25, 21-25, 26-24, 18-25), Saturday morning in Champaign, Ill.
Senior Lucy Charuk finished the contest with 11 kills and five blocks, while junior Katie Norris added 10 kills and seven digs. Freshman Caitlin Ogletree lead the team with 27 assists and freshman Natalie Keck turned in a team-high 16 digs.
"We started off extremely slow, waiting for Illinois to set the tone of the match," head coach Molly Alvey said. "In sets two, three and four I saw a different team on the court. We got better today, however, we need to learn to put together a full match. That comes down to knowing and learning how to compete every single point of every single match."
Houston struggled in the first set, falling behind 8-3 before calling a timeout. Out of the break, the Illini went on a 9-0 run to increase its lead over the Cougars. Junior Ashley Applequist ended the run with a kill but the deficit would be too much to overcome as UH dropped the first set, 25-10.
The Cougars continued to struggle during the opening points of the second set but were able to battle to within three, 18-15, on an attack error by Illinois' Erin Johnson. UH continued to gain momentum and played to a 23-20 deficit but the Illini would hold off the Cougars to take the second set, 25-21.
The momentum from the second set carried to the third for the Cougars. Houston played to a 15-15 tie with Illinois and traded points midway through the set. Three-straight points by the Illini put the Cougars behind 22-20 and it looked as though Illinois would get the win in the third set. The Cougars, fueled by three kills from Norris, would battle back and tie the set 24-24 before earning a 26-24 win.
Houston played to a 13-13 tie in the fourth set before a 4-0 run by Illinois put them in a 17-13 hole. Alvey would call a timeout to regroup her team but Illinois would continue its run out of the break, winning the set 25-18.
