BOSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team pulled off two wins against Boston College and Northeastern University Saturday afternoon at Boston College. The Cougars topped BC 231-69 and took down Northeastern 159-142.
Houston was able to overcome a slow start in the water and held a five point lead heading into the 200-yard IM, the last individual event of the day.
"I'm real proud of how the girls fought again," said head coach Augie Busch. "I'm learning a lot about this team very early on in the season and I know that they have a lot of fight in them. I'm real excited to see them battle against Miami for our first home meet and I hope we can continue to see improvement."
The Cougars clinched the meet with three student-athletes acquiring points in the 200-yard IM. Junior Reka Kovacs took first while Moira Frasier and Beccy Hillis placed fourth and fifth to give Houston 12 points in the event.
Kovacs and Hills placed 1-2 in the 200-yard breaststroke as well.
The Cougars 400-yard freestyle relay closed out the meet with a first-place finish (3:35.77) for the second day in a row. Kim Eeson, Heather Coutts, Colleen Donovan and Heather Winn formed the winning relay team for Houston.
Sophomore Heather Winn added two more victories in the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events as she took both races the day before at Boston University. Lizzie Justice took second in the 1,000 free and earned third in the 500-yard free.
Kim Eeson added another victory in the 200 free as she won the previous day at Boston University. The senior from Harare, Zimbabwe, took second in the 50-yard free and was also a member of the win 400-free relay squad.
The Houston divers continued to dominate their competition as Julia Lonnegren, Natasha Burgess and Torri Olanski placed first through third in both the the 1M and 3M events. The Cougars were their own toughest competition as they outpaced the rest of the field by a wide margin.
Moira Frasier earned her first victory of the season by taking first in the 100 free. She was joined in the point scoring with Colleen Donovan (third) and Maddie Clark (fifth) in the event.
