Cross Country Men Finish Fifth, Women Eighth

HOUSTON - The University of Houston cross country team's finish fifth and eighth at the Rouge Grass Routes Running Festival in Austin, Texas Friday night. The men took fifth, while the women placed eighth.
"The course was challenging with several hills, but that's what makes cross country exciting, unexpected challenges," head coach Ryan Turner said. "Running at night with lights on the course was a new twist as well. I think our men and women enjoyed experiencing the hilly course and lights, it was something new."
For the men, Wesley Ruttoh paced the Cougars as he finished the 8K course in 24:49, placing seventh. Yonas Tesfai followed Ruttoh, as the freshman placed 11th, with a 25:58 mark. David Smith, Nate Pineda and Anthony Jordan also put together solid races for the Cougars, finishing 30th, 35th and 42nd, respectively.
"We've made a lot of improvements this season, and our men are much better then in past seasons," Turner said. "We still have a long way to go and I'm confident we'll continue to keep improving as the season unfolds."
On the women's side, Megan Munoz led the Cougars as she finished the 6K course in 23:08, finishing 22nd. Munoz has been the lead runner for Houston in every competition this season. Kathryn Duccomun followed Munoz, as she finished in 23:44, placing 34th. Julie Reinwald finished as the number three runner for the Cougars, completing the course in 24:19, placing 42nd.
"I'm really proud of Julie," Turner said. "She's historically been our number five, six, or seven runner and to finish as our number three runner today was a huge step forward for her."
UP NEXT
Houston will travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for the Cal-State Northridge Invitational on Oct. 15.
