HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer team dropped their first match of the 2010 season losing to Baylor 1-0 in Waco, Texas on Sunday. The Cougars record goes to 3-1-1 on the season.
For the first time this season, the Houston offense was unable to get on the scoreboard. Baylor's defense held Houston in check in the first half without allowing a shot. Houston's defense allowed only four shot attempts as each side battled for possesion in the first frame.
The Cougars offense began to open up in the second half but were still unable to find goal. It was also the first time this season that the opposition outshot Houston.
"It was a really physical game today and to be honest, they just outplayed us," said head coach Susan Bush. "We weren't able to get into a rhythm and Baylor did a good job taking us out of comfort level and style of play."
The two teams combined for 33 fouls and four yellow cards. Houston drew 17 fouls and had two players and a team yellow card on their game sheet.
"This week we will focus on winning the aerial battles, controlling the ball at our feet. We'll continue to work on improving in all facets of the game and sticking to our team philosophy and style of play."
Freshmen Nicole Duarte and Jasmine Martinez provided all the shots (six) for the Cougars. Three found their way to target but were denied by the Baylor goalkeeper.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Cami Koski allowed only her third goal of the season in the 58th minute and had two saves on the afternoon.
