HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team lost to Oklahoma 3-2 (22-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 13-15) Saturday afternoon during the second day of play in the Houston Invitational at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
The Cougars fell behind 0-2 but were able to rebound, winning the third and fourth sets to force the deciding fifth set. Houston, however, would come up just shy of the win, falling in the fifth, 15-13.
Three Cougars recorded double-digit kills against the Sooners. Lucy Charuk and Ingrida Zauere led the team with 11 kills, while Stephanie Nwachukwu added 10. Amber Brooks paced the team with 35 assists and 10 digs. Amanda Carson led the team with 12 digs. Houston also added 12 team blocks.
After the Sooners jumped out to the 2-0 lead, Houston came back to win the third set, 25-23. However, it wasn't an easy task for the Cougars. The two teams would battle back-and-forth the entire set, forcing four lead changes and tying the score nine times before Houston was able to regain the lead at 23-22. Head coach Molly Alvey called a timeout to gather the team and off the bench Oklahoma scored the first point, but Houston answered with the final two points to win the set.
The fourth set would continue the momentum in the Cougars' favor as they would jump out to a 15-9 lead to hold off the surging Sooners for the win.
Houston would force a fifth set for the first time in 2010 and it looked as though they would earn the win, after taking an 11-6 lead but Oklahoma battled its way back and slipped past the Cougars for the victory.
UH will wrap up tournament play at 7:30 p.m. when they face No. 17 Tennessee. Prior to the Cougars' match, Oklahoma and Florida State will play at 5 p.m.
