HOUSTON HEAD COACH Joe Curl
On the game:
"It was a game I hoped would play out that way but it wasn't something I was expecting. It is always a dogfight when we play Rice, and I still felt like it was. They do a lot of things well, and I never thought it was out of reach until the end. I was coaching in four-minute increments so I wasn't really looking at the score until it was winning time, which is the last eight and four minutes."
On Ashlee Joseph:
"I'm very proud of her. She's been through the ups-and-downs of program and stuck it out. She should graduate in the summer and has matured a lot since she's been here. She played really well tonight and stepped up her game. That gives us confidence heading into the tournament.
"We wanted to have the best season we could because it was Ashlee's last season. We talked about that on day one. I'm so proud of her for being here four years, graduating, becoming an alumnus, a Cougar and everything that comes with it. She can hold her head up high for all that she has accomplished."
On Brittany Scott:
"It looked like she was shooting into a bathtub in the first half, she couldn't miss. She shot a little bit flatter in the second half but then she got back to her normal self. I was very proud of her tonight.
On the Conference USA tournament:
"I want to catch my breath and talk to the kids first. We finished in the second seed which is exciting in itself. We could have had the first seed if we didn't drop a couple of games that we should have won. But that's history, and we move forward. It's great that we have the No. 2 seed because it allows us to have a bye, and we only have to play three games in three days instead of four games. We're playing some of our best basketball right now and that gives us a lot of momentum."
On the team's health:
"A stomach flu has been going around but we should be fine by Tuesday. Courtney Taylor was under the weather but still gutted it out tonight. Leslee Mason couldn't even get to the gym she was hurting so bad. We'll be fine next week. We're taking tomorrow off and then practicing on Saturday before we head to Tulsa on Sunday.
SENIOR FORWARD Ashlee Joseph
On the game:
"I had to step up with our players feeling sick and this being my last game at Hofheinz. I wanted to play hard for my teammates."
On Senior Night:
"I was a little nervous at first, especially since I had a big role to fill in with Leslee being gone. I needed to help Courtney on the boards against Rice's big post players. We all did a good job helping out on the rebounds."
JUNIOR GUARD BRITTANY SCOTT
On her shooting:
"I was focusing a little more in warm-ups and had my shot going right off the bat. The game seemed to come easy and that happens when my shot is falling. Then my offense gives my defense a little spark so it's a nice pickup for me."
SOPHOMORE GUARD ROXANNE BUTTON
On the win:
"It was a great win. I'm excited to pick up our second-place seed; it was awesome for us. We all knew we'd have to step in with the illnesses but everyone stepped up, played their role and finished their business."
RICE HEAD COACH GREG WILLIAMS
On the game:
"Kudos to Houston. They played extremely well, welcoming back their head coach Joe Curl. I'm very happy he is back coaching. Houston did a great job tonight. They played a lot harder and had more intensity then we did. The game was over pretty early. I thought we were ready to play but it didn't happen. We couldn't guard them, and they got to the basket at will on us. I give them a lot of credit, they played extremely well."
