POST GAME QUOTES
Women's Basketball - Memphis at Houston
Feb. 7, 2010
HEAD COACH Joe Curl
On Porsche Landry's absence
"Obviously, not having Porsche (Landry) there, we had to play differently and it just really showed the versatility of our girls. It obviously was a team win. I think the reason why Lesslee and Courtney are playing better is because of a stat you don't see on the stat sheet. We've emphasized in the locker room that they need to get at least 20 touches at the half. Like at half time, one of the girls had four and the other had five. That's absolutely not the way we can be successful. The more we touch it in the post, and we have the most un-selfish posts, at least as far as I'm concerned, gives that our shooters better rhythm. We needed post play today and they stepped up and got rebound after rebound. I don't think we did as good of job as we should have."
On the last four minutes
"I was the one that was being too conservative. We had several side-line passes that we could have scored on."
On LaTorya Bullard of Memphis:
"We knew about her and talked about her. Our team is at its best when we play team defense. Bullard made it to the basket by way of the baseline a few times in a row so we started playing off of her but then she knocked down some shots. That is something we need to realize during the game and improve upon."
On consistency
"The one thing we have always been consistent about, which is really the most important thing, is playing hard. This team has played hard every night, in the good times and in the bad times. We lost a game when we were up by double-digits but today we won. We are in different waters and we're learning more about each of us. The inconsistencies I would like to clean up are free-throw shooting, rebounding and taking care of the ball. Those are all things you can work on during practice. We know what they are and we will continue to improve upon them. For example, Leslee Mason shot very well from the foul line tonight. That's not luck; she's been practicing hard on that.
"We're trying to improve on the fly and the best thing now is we are tied for first-place. We are fixing problems and improving. We have a handful of conference games left and I would much rather be at the top than the bottom. We have reached the top while still improving."
JUNIOR GUARD Brittney Scott
On running the point guard position:
"I don't get as winded playing the one as the two. It wasn't that much different for me though."
On playing on her birthday
"I think I'm a leader on the court, so I just went out there knowing I had to play hard."
On Memphis closing the gap on the Houston lead
"The game was different and looking back on it we should have just slowed things down."
JUNIOR FORWARD LESLEE MASON
On free throw shooting:
"I was more relaxed at the line, I've been too tense over the past. That causes me to over think things and today I just stayed relaxed.
On her blocked shots
"I was kind of excited about this game. I knew it was an important game because we were playing for first place, so I just played more aggressively on defense than usual."
JUNIOR FORWARD Courtney Taylor
On breaking the double-double record:
"I don't know what to say about it. I'm glad I broke it and I'm pretty excited about."
On the game
"It was different. We had different players in there and we played a different style of game. It just shows how versatile we are and that we have people that can play in different situations. I'm just glad we won."
