NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The University of Houston volleyball team fell during its second match of the first day of the Ladyjack Invitational, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-22) to host Stephen F. Austin on Friday evening inside Johnson Coliseum.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 3-11, while Stephen F. Austin improved to 9-5. Earlier in the day, the Cougars needed only 52 minutes to dismantle Alcorn State 3-0.
In the first set, the Cougars raced out to an 8-2 lead, but the Ladyjacks rallied to tie the game at 10-10. The two teams battled back and forth from there before SFA claimed a 19-15 lead. UH answered with a 5-1 run of its own to tie the game at 20-20, and the two teams traded the next four points before the Ladyjacks scored the final three points to take the set.
In set two, the Cougars and Ladyjacks battled to a 4-4 tie after the first eight points. However, it was all Stephen F. Austin from there. The Ladyjacks scored 16 of the next 21 points to seize control of the match.
The Cougars jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set three before the Ladyjacks grabbed a 13-10 advantage. Despite the SFA comeback, the Cougars kept the third set close and eventually claimed a 22-21 lead on an SFA attack error. That would be as close as the Cougars would get, though, as SFA won the final four points to win the set and the match.
Senior outside hitter Kinsey Cave led the Cougars with 11 kills, while junior defensive specialist Amanda Carson posted a match-high 18 digs. Freshmansetter Tara Roenicke and junior outside hitter Marluci Toazzi added 11 digs apiece.
Melissa Miksch posted the lone double-double of the match with 10 kills and 13 digs to lead Stephen F. Austin, while Mary Caitlin Bottles added 11 kills. Madison Hanlan came off the bench to record a team-high 14 digs.
The Cougars wrap up their stay at the tournament at 10 a.m., Saturday when they meet Miami (Ohio). Fans can follow live stats by clicking the GameTracker link at UHCougars.com.
