HOUSTON -- Despite four service aces from Ashley Applequist, the University of Houston volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match (25-19, 25-13, 25-18) to the Baylor Bears in their second contest of the Flo Hyman Invitational at the Athletics Alumni Center.
Leading the way for Houston was Kinsey Cave who recorded a team-high eight kills, while Tara Roenicke recorded 22 assists.
After splitting the first two points of the opening set, Houston went on a 6-0 run to take a 7-1 lead into a Baylor timeout. Out of the break, UH tacked on one more point before the Bears would score six of the next seven points to pull within two, 9-7. Houston would hold on to the lead for most of the contest, trading a one point lead with the visitors just twice before Baylor pulled ahead for good with the scoreboard reading 19-18.
Houston battled the Bears point for point, tying the second set at 4-4 before Baylor answered scoring the next five points, forcing a Cougar timeout. The Baylor run continued as they scored the first two points off the bench, but Houston stopped the run scoring the next two points to trail, 11-6. The deficit would be too much to overcome as Baylor would go into the deciding set leading 2-0.
Baylor jumped out to an early lead in the final set by taking twelve of the first fifteen points. Houston struggled to bridge the gap throughout the remainder of the set. Houston made things interesting with a 4-1 run to bring the score 21-14 before Baylor called a halt to play. Coming out of the timeout, Houston was able to keep pace with the Bears but was unable to cut into the deficit before falling 25-18.
Houston will be back on the court Saturday at 1:30 p.m. for a match against Southeastern Louisiana. They will close out the Flo Hyman Invitational against Indiana at 7:30 p.m.
