HOUSTON - The University of Houston cross-country team is proud to announce that it will be hosting the 2009 Conference USA Championships on Oct. 31 at Bear Branch Park in the Woodlands, Texas.
"We are very excited to host the championships this next season," head coach Ryan Turner said. "This will give the city of Houston and families of the runners a chance to watch some great competition."
This is the first C-USA Cross Country Championships that Houston has hosted.
The Bear Branch Park is also the course for the Nike South High School Championships.
In 2008, the women's team finished fifth with 145 points, while the men finished sixth with 156 points at the C-USA Cross Country Championships, which was hosted by Memphis.
For the women, freshman Stephanie Aldea was named 2008 C-USA Freshman of the Year and to the C-USA Second Team, while Starla Garcia was named to the C-USA Third Team.
Aldea became the first female Cougar individual to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the program's history since Christy Bench in 1994.
The Cougars will also host the annual 2009 High School Cougar Classic on Aug. 22, and Johnny Morriss Invitational on Aug. 28.
