Volleyball Nears End of Regular Season

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team will host Memphis and UAB this weekend at the Athletics/Alumni Center in two of the final three matches of the 2008 regular season.
The Cougars match against Memphis will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, while the UAB match is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
All matches will be available on Gametracker by clicking on the volleyball schedule at www.UHCougars.com. Admission to the matches costs $5.
Houston is 15-11 and 7-6 in conference play after splitting matches against SMU and Tulsa last weekend. The Cougars lost 3-1 to SMU and rebounded to sweep Tulsa, 3-0, to cap the weekend. Sophomore Amanda Carson was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in the two matches. Carson averaged 5.71 digs per set to pace the league and had game-highs of 24 digs at SMU and 16 digs at Tulsa.
Memphis enters the weekend with a 17-10 overall record and a 8-5 mark in C-USA. They are riding a four-match win streak into play this weekend. As a team, Memphis leads the league in blocks (2.83) and has held their opponents to a league-best .144 hitting percentage. Houston is 18-8 all-time against the Tigers.
UAB is 22-3 this season and have a league-best 12-1 mark in conference play. They have not lost a match since a 3-1 defeat to Memphis on Sept. 18. As a team, UAB leads the conference with a .265 hitting percentage and ranks third in digs (15.45) and assists (12.35). Houston is 14-2 all-time against the Blazers.
UP NEXT
Houston will close out the regular season with a 7 p.m. match against Rice on Nov. 13. Prior to the match, the Cougars will honor seniors Justine Farmer, Barbara Freitas and Kelsey King.
Following the home finale, Houston will travel to Memphis, Tenn., for the Conference USA Championships on Nov. 20-23.
