HOUSTON - The Cougar cross country team is off to the Penberthy Intramural Fields in College Station, Texas for the Texas A&M Invitational this Saturday, Sept. 22. The men will be running an 8K kicking off the race at 7:45 a.m. with the women's 5K start time falling at 8:30 a.m.
"This will be our first true test," head coach Ryan Turner said. "Almost every team attending is from our region. We want to go in there with the mindset that we can be strong competitors against these teams and improve our regional ranking overall."
Stephen Magness is set to lead the Cougar men with Daniel Martinez and Ahmed Harb completing the top-end set of runners. The women will have a set of three at the front with a continuous battle for the front runner between Jessica Cook, Oumama Hallal and Kelcee Keenan.
"Steve is one of the top American distance runners," Turner said. "He'll do a great job leading the men. On the women's side we're lucky because we have three different girls that are close to the same level. It's just a matter of who decides to take the lead that day."
Turner and the team are planning on taking what they learned from the meet at UTEP and improving in Texas A&M Invitational. The men showed they could run with No. 7 UTEP and plan on giving the same performance against Texas A&M, UTPA and other regionally ranked teams.
"Overall we want to go over there," Turner said, "and compete with the teams that are ranked in the region to get a regional ranking of our own."
