HOUSTON - The University of Houston men's team finished second with the women coming in fourth last night in the Lori Fitzgerald Invitational hosted by UTEP in El Paso, Texas. Senior transfer Steven Magness led the men's team finishing seventh overall while Jessica Cook stepped up for the women in a 14th place finish.
"We competed really well," head coach Ryan Turner said. "We had three guys finish in the top-10 and I really felt like Steven did a great job, he was a great leader in this race. I felt our girls struggled more with the altitude and travel, leaving early the morning of the race, but Jessica Cook ran really well for us, she ran smart and it was a strong race for her."
Following Magness, Daniel Martinez took a ninth place finish with a time of 25:04.2 while Ahmed Harb came in not far behind in 25:14.9 and a tenth place finish. Antony Keller had a great race in only his second college competition placing 20th (26:56.7).
The women were led by Cook with Oumama Hallal taking 22nd place finish and a 21:11.4 time. Kelcee Keenan followed up placing 27th, 21:57.0, and with a time of 22:38.1 and a 25th place finish, Erica Hannemann followed. Coming in right behind were Adriane Guinn, 26th and a 23:01.1 time, and Jasmine Trier, 31st and a 23:24.3 time.
"We just need to work on racing smarter," Turner said, "and taking advantage of the athletic abilities that we have on our team."
The Cougar cross country team will be in action again next weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas.
