HOUSTON (AP) -- Dion Dowell had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Houston extended its winning streak to eight games with a 73-49 victory against Southern on Saturday night.
Dowell, who also had five blocks, made six of 10 from 3-point range to offset a cold shooting night from leading scorer Robert McKiver, who was 3-of-13 on 3-pointers. McKiver finished with 15 points, six below his average.
The Cougars (9-1) matched their best start since 1991-92. They won despite shooting just 37 percent from the field.
Southern (1-6) shot 24 percent and made just 12 field goals -- the same number Houston had in the first half. The Jaguars were led by Jazz Williams, who had 13 points.
Houston took control with a 16-0 run capped by a Dowell 3-pointer that made it 28-7 with 7:52 left in the first half. Southern went more than six minutes without a point.
