FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Houston senior Stephen Magness finished 11th with a 30:04.3 finish time at the NCAA South Central Regionals in Fayetteville, Ark. today putting him just out of reach of an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
Magness was joined in the race by sophomores Daniel Martinez, finishing 30th with a 31:20.2 time, and Ahmed Harb, finishing 46th in 31:51.6. All three men's runners improved their times from last year's Regional. Martinez moved from a 70th place finish while Harb improved from his 64th place.
"I am really proud of how all our runners did today," head coach Ryan Turner said. "They all performed very well and improved a great deal."
Jessica Cook led the four women across the line with a 57th place finish in 22:53.1 followed by Adriane Guinn in 72nd (23:21.4), and 86th place finish by Erica Hannemann in 23:52.5 and rounded out by Kelcee Keenan in 105th for a 24:39.7 time.
"All four of our women improved from their run at the Chili Pepper Festival," Turner said. "They did a great job here today and I was proud of the way all of them competed."
Magness has a chance to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Championships for his performance in today's meet. As the 11th place finish he was out of reach of an automatic bid by less than one hundredth of a second. The Championship draws will be announced on Sunday, November 11 at 6:00 pm.
"Overall I'm very happy with the way we performed in the meet today," Turner said. "We really improved from the beginning of the year and I'm happy with the way we ended season. It shows the potential we have to build upon in upcoming years."
