WACO - Akilah Grant-Sullivan crushed a career-best 12 kills leading the University of Houston volleyball team to a convincing sweep over Louisiana-Monroe (30-16, 30-17, 30-13) in 67 minutes Saturday morning to open day two of the Clarion Invitational on the Baylor campus.
Grant-Sullivan didn't commit an attack error on 19 swings, connecting at a .632 attack percentage. The Illinois native also added a career-high six blocks.
The Cougars (5-1) showed their depth as starters Justine Farmer and Becca Sartori did not play. The Houston defense dominated the match, outblocking ULM, 12-0. The Warhawks (1-6) were also held to a stifling -.130 attack percentage, committing 33 attack errors during the match.
Kelsey King spearheaded the Houston offense to an overall .364 attack percentage. She passed out a match-high 34 assists to go along with seven digs and four blocks.
Ashley Calhoun took off the libero jersey and fired in a career-high 11 kills, while Kinsey Cave and Erin Rice notched five kills apiece on matching .571 attack clips. Rice also made her presence felt at the net, registering a career-best six blocks.
Houston jumped out to early commanding leads in all three games. Grant-Sullivan, Calhoun and Cave each slapped four kills in the opening frame as the Cougars scored 24 of the match's first 33 points en route to a 30-16 win.
The Cougar defense shined in games two and three. After giving up 10 kills in game one, Houston allowed only 10 kills in the final two games combined. ULM didn't notch its first kill of game two until the Cougars had already built a 13-4 advantage. Six of the 12 Houston blocks came in game two.
The Cougars left no doubt racing out to a quick 7-0 lead in game three on Calhoun's serve. King matched a season-high, setting the Houston offense to a .458 attack percentage in game three. The Cougars saved its best effort for the final game winning 30-13.
